5 - Zillis / Chiesa San Martino ( 945 m A.M.S.L )

Zillis hosts the Romanesque church dedicated to San Martino (12th Century) with its world-renowned ceiling.

153 wooden panels in perfect condition illustrate the life of Christ but set within the context of a typically Medieval view of the World.

At the centre of the town is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the unique Romanesque ceiling. Zillis also entertains, within a typical farmhouse, the "Tgea da Schons" Rhaetian for "the museum for the Schams valley"

The museum presents an overview of all the cultural aspects of the Schams, day to day existence, agriculture and local arts and crafts. Zillis also represents an ideal setting off point for a short excursion to Schamserberg, the sun-kissed terrace of Val Schons, dotted with unspoilt villages and well-known for the Wergenstein Center da capri corns ( the centre of the ibex).

Chiesa di San Martino

World famous for its Romanesque ceiling. The church of San Martino is known as the "Sistine of the Alps". The work - unique of its kind and immaculately maintained even to this day, was constructed in the Romanesque period, at the beginning of the 12th century. 153 wooden panels, each of around 90, make up the entire ceiling. The Museum of the San Martino Church exhibits amongst other things a representation of a Medieval artist´s painting studio together with illustrations on the creation of the pictorial panels.
